Sample letters — three letters from the free chapter of each series, with translation, painting and narration.

Learn a language by receiving real letters from the classics, one a day, like messages. The first series is Vincent van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo from Arles; the second is Mozart's letters to his father, his sister, his wife and friends (1770–1791); the third is Napoleon's letters to Joséphine; the fourth is Goya's letters in Spanish to his childhood friend Martín Zapater and others (1775–1828).

As you learn the words, the translation folds away and the original reads on its own. Read each sentence along phrase by phrase and the app scores your intonation and rhythm on the device; read a whole letter on your own and it is sealed. No accounts, ads or analytics — everything stays on your phone.

Sources and licences

The app uses only public-domain originals and material whose holders state that it may be reused freely, including commercially. We have not drawn any pictures of our own. The sources of each series' letter text, pictures and music are listed one by one below.

Licences fall into three groups.

See the terms and image policy for the full policy and procedure. If you believe something infringes your rights, write to ruahn49@gmail.com: we take the item down while we check and reply within 7 days.

Obvious typos and old spellings in the original letters are corrected to modern spelling without marking each change (all series; the Mozart German keeps the 1865 edition’s spelling).
