(PD-Art)

Terms and image policy

Effective 13 October 2026 (paid use added)

1. The service

Lingua Museum is an app for learning a language by receiving one public-domain historical letter a day. There are no accounts, and your learning record stays on your device (privacy policy).

2. Content and rights

Letter texts come from public-domain editions (for Vincent van Gogh, the 1914 edition Brieven aan zijn broeder). The Korean and English translations, word notes and the app's design and writing are our own. Every picture's source and licence is listed on the sources page and in the app's notices screen.

3. Image policy

We never use pictures we have drawn ourselves; we use images of public-domain originals only, chosen in two tiers.

3-1. Default — images the holder releases for free use. Images that the holding institution itself releases for use without permission, including commercial use (CC0, Open Access, public-domain marking), used as the institution publishes them.

3-2. Exception — faithful reproductions of masterpieces and of paintings the letters describe (PD-Art). Only for an artist's major works or for paintings a letter speaks of directly, where the image is needed to present the work, and only when all of these hold: the work is a two-dimensional artwork (painting, drawing, print) whose author died more than 70 years ago; the image is a faithful reproduction published on Wikimedia Commons as a public-domain artwork reproduction (PD-Art); and we do not take it from the museum's own website (so we do not accept the museum's terms of use). Basis: Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. (US, 1999); Article 14 of the EU Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market (2019/790); the originality requirement of the Korean Copyright Act. Such images are noted as PD-Art reproductions on this site's sources page.

3-3. What we do not use. Photographs of three-dimensional works (sculpture, crafts, architecture); works still in copyright; images we have drawn or generated ourselves; works held by Italian state collections or the Vatican Museums (whose laws or rules require permission and fees for commercial reproduction).

3-4. Names and marks. We name holding institutions only as a factual credit. We do not use museum logos or brand typefaces, do not use wording that suggests an official or partner relationship, and do not put any museum's name in the app's name or icon.

3-5. Respect for the original. We do not recolour images or combine them with others. When we show part of a painting enlarged for viewing and learning, the whole painting is always one tap away on the same screen, with the artist, title, date and holding institution.

4. Rights questions and takedown requests

We respect rights holders and respond actively and in good faith. Write to ruahn49@gmail.com (subject “Lingua Museum rights”) with the work or item, where it appears, the basis of your rights and how to reach you. We acknowledge within 2 business days; we take the item down while we check (immediately on our server and this site, in the next app update for content bundled in the app); and we reply with the outcome within 7 days, replacing the image with another public-domain work where needed. Every request and its handling is recorded and fed back into how we choose images.

5. No affiliation

Lingua Museum is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by any museum, library or foundation named here; their names appear only to credit sources.

6. Changes

If these terms change we will post the new effective date here, and announce important changes in the app.
